New Heart Failure Drug Recently Approved

There has been recent approval of a new and promising treatment for dogs affected by certain forms of heart failure. This is an exciting development in that it allows us to use additional treamtment options that will not only improve the quality of life but also extend the lives of dogs affected by heart failure. By increasing the stength of cardiac contractions while at the same time not increasing cardiac muscle oxygen consumption, delivery of oxygen to peripheral tissues is improved. In addition, there is a balanced effect on both arteries and veins which reduces the workload of the heart. This new drug is called Vetmedin (Pimobendan) and is produced by Boehringer Ingelheim.
